Our Vintage Cafe From 2007 Is A Fascinating Look At Yusuf Islam, Cat Stevens', Reemergence Into The Pop World

December 3, 2013 - Our Vintage Cafe this week takes us back to 2007 with Yusuf Islam, Cat Stevens. Although previously he had sung a version of his song “Peace Train” in the wake of 9/11, his album Another Cup was his first step back into the pop world in almost two decades.

Cat Stevens ruled the pop charts from the early 70’s with albums like Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser and The Firecat among many other hits. At the height of his fame in 1978 he simply stopped, converted to Islam, gave away his wealth and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. He may have wanted to be left alone but instantly he became the most famous face in the British Muslim community. As such his statements supporting the fatwa on author Salmon Rushdie became big news and caused a major backlash. We’ll discuss that and talk about his spiritual journey and hear songs from Another Cup along with a couple from his pop star past. I think you will find it as fascinating as I do to revisit this place in time with Yusuf Islam, Cat Stevens, on the World Cafe.
